How to play Dungeons & Dragons at The Game Room

So - you want to play Dungeons & Dragons at The Game Room. You might be an experienced player curious about the way we do things, a complete newbie hoping to get started, or somewhere in the middle - either way, this article will get you up to speed and rolling dice in no time.

How does D&D at The Game Room work?

We run self-contained, 'one-shot' adventures twice a week, all connecting back to a central town that acts as a hub for player characters. We have a curated team of creative and exceptionally beginner-friendly Dungeon Masters on rotation, ensuring you'll have a great time whether you're completely new or a seasoned adventurer.  Our DMs all specialise in different sorts of adventures, infusing tons of personal charm into every quest.

Dungeons & Dragons table setting

So while your Dungeon Master and fellow players may rotate from week to week, you'll keep your character and level up as you play, gaining new abilities and equipment. You get all the progression of playing in a full-on campaign, but without the regular time commitment, allowing you to drop in and out as you please.

Sessions run on Thursday evening between 6PM-10PM and Saturday afternoon, between 12PM-4PM.

How do I get started?

Join our Dungeons & Dragons Discord server!

It offers a remarkable wealth of user-friendly information and a passionate community. We have members who specialise in getting new players started, so don't worry about understanding the game before joining in. Having a quick read of the Discord server's channels will give you a rough idea of how we do things, but you can always ask an admin if you need any help.

Quests will be posted by Dungeon Masters at the beginning of the week, and players can sign up by requesting a spot when they become available! We generally post quests with at least one week's notice.

How do I make a character?

Making a character can feel quite daunting if you haven't done it before, but there are tools to make it easier! We typically recommend using DnDBeyondwhich has a step-by-step approach to creating a character much like you'd find in a videogame. We do have a few guidelines for character creation, so please review the full rules found on Discord.

If you need more help or guidance through the process, just ask in Discord. One of the team will be happy to help. Once you've made your character, you'll just have to post it in Discord so a Dungeon Master can check it's all good - they'll approve it and you'll be ready to start questing! We're all on hand to help you through every step of the process.

How do I learn to play Dungeons & Dragons?

The best way to learn D&D is to play! All of our Dungeon Masters are experienced and happy to guide new players through their first adventures, so if you'd like to learn, just come along to a session and make it known that you'd like some guidance.

If you'd rather do a little bit of preparation beforehand, we recommend the following:

  • Read up on your character's rules. You don't need to know everything back to front, but a general understanding of how your abilities work will go a long way.
  • Watch some play videos online. This will help you get comfortable with how exploration, actions and turns in combat tend to work.

What do I need to bring with me to a D&D session at The Game Room?

There's a few essentials to bear in mind, but you can keep it relatively simple!

  • Your character sheet. This can be either digitally via the DnDBeyond app or website, or a traditional paper sheet if you prefer.
  • Dice. You can use physical dice or a dice-rolling app - as long as your rolls are visible to the group! We have bags of mystery matching dice sets available for purchase if you need some!
  • Something to represent your character. Battles and exploration often play out on maps, and many players find it helpful to represent their character with a miniature - you can use any form of counter, small coin, dice or
  • A £5 'table fee' for your spot at the table - please pay this upon entry. The Game Room accepts card and contactless payments only - thank you!

Still have questions? Great - we'd be happy to answer them. Email us at support@thegameroom.co.uk or reach out on Discord!
